When the evergreen was ever green
thru years of summer suns,
it stored the heat
but shared the cool
thru days of shade
and fanning nights
while still collecting dew.
The tree that gave such cooling shade
thru years of lengthy summer days
its needles now are turning brown
but promises of stored up heat,
from deep within its mighty frame,
will gladden short but dreary days
and long cold wintry nights.
When the evergreen is never green
its blessing still do grow,
to heat the hearth
and mulch the soil
it springs anew
and always warms the soul
